Creating an Account on ASUWLink
Anyone who is associated with the University (i.e. a student, faculty, or staff member with a valid University ID) can obtain a username on the Information Technology (IT) academic server ASUWlink. This is, in turn, a prerequisite for obtaining accounts on most other IT systems, or for setting mail forwarding on the UW central e-mail gateway. You can use your ASUWlink account to obtain email and to publish a web site on the Internet.

At a later date, a web-based procedure from IT will completely replace the instructions in this How To.

A procedure exists on ASUWlink that creates accounts for people associated with the University. This procedure is available through the username NEWUSER. To create your own account, log in to NewUser from NCSA Telnet for Macintosh or Telnet from a Windows Command Prompt with the username NEWUSER and the password NEWUSER. Each person who is affiliated with the University of Wyoming may use NEWUSER to create one username.

This guide is intended to assist you in creating your username. A word about the terminology used in this document: when the instructions say to ENTER a command, that means you type the command and then press the Enter key.
Procedure

1) Log on to newuser

  • Macintosh - Start the program called Nifty Telnet. Type in newuser as the Host and click OK.
  • Windows - Start by typing telnet newuser under the Run. . . command of the Start menu.

2) To access the procedure NEWUSER, when the prompt appears for Username and Password, enter NEWUSER

Username: NEWUSER

Password: NEWUSER (Note: The password will not show on the screen.)

After a pause, a message will appear indicating that usernames are granted for students, faculty and staff, etc., followed by a prompt to enter your last name.

3) Enter your last name. Entries may be in upper or lower case, or mixed upper and lower case letters.

4) A prompt will request that you enter your first name

5) A prompt will request that you enter your Social Security Number (9 digits). Enter your social security number without hyphens or dashes.

6) A prompt will request that you enter your birthday (6 digits, YYMMDD) Note that the Year comes first!

Your date of birth must be in the form YYMMDD where...

YY is the last two digits in the four digit year (for example, 65 for 1965)

MM is the two digit month (for example, 01 for January...12 for December)

DD is a two digit day of the month (for example 04 for the 4th day of the month)

If the information you have provided is accepted, you will be prompted to choose your username. This name can be a maximum of 8 characters.

7) Enter a unique username. Your username can be from two to eight letters and digits long and must begin with a letter. Information Technology suggests that you choose a username that is some form of your name. Your accounts on the IT computer systems are your own personal accounts that you will keep throughout your stay at the University. They are not removed from the system unless you discontinue registering or are no longer employed with the University.

8) The next prompt will ask you to choose a password (6 characters minimum; 8 characters maximum)

Follow the instructions on the screen and enter a password. This password will not display on the screen.

9) You will be asked to verify your password.

Enter your password again. This is to ensure that the computer interpreted accurately the password you entered previously. This also will not display on the screen.

The information you give is processed and the account is created or rejected. In either event, the program will inform you that the account has been created or give a reason that it could not create an account for you.

If you have questions concerning the NEWUSER procedure or encounter problems creating your account, call the consultant assigned to your area. To locate the consultant assigned to your area, call 766-3663.

Students needing assistance may consult the lab assistant in any of the microcomputer labs or call 766-2082.

Your email address will be username@uwyo.edu and you web address will be w3.uwyo.edu/~username.
