Creating a Poster

The Dept. of Geology & Geophysics owns an HP 755CM Large-Format plotter that can be used to create posters for national meetings or for display within the department. Posters can include text, scanned images, plots, diagrams, etc.

When working from a Macintosh computer, Adobe Illustrator has the fewest problems when sending the finished poster file to the plotter. Other programs such as Canvas can be used, but can create problems and poor results. This documentation will give instructions for using Adobe Illustrator.

Large image files can exceed the print spool capacity on the HP 755 plotter. Therefore, scanned images and the final poster should be set to a resolution of less than 300 dpi. Generally the visual quality of the poster will not imporve much from 200 dpi to 300 dpi, but the plotter is less likely to crash for the lower resolution poster. See the
Scanning Resolution Help Desk File for more information.
