Printing to the Epson Stylus 850 Color Printer from a Macintosh
The Epson Stylus850 is a color ink-jet printer available to users of the GGCS Computer Lab. The cost per page is $0.75/page for students. Faculty without their own color printer can use the Epson printer, but must mark down how many pages are printed on the sheets provided on the printer table. See the Help Desk File "GGCS Printing Policies".

Printing to paper
Any file, other than PostScript (i.e. Adobe Illustrator) files can be printed directly to paper on the Epson color ink jet. Select the Epson printer by following the instructions in the Help Desk File "Selecting a Printer from a Macintosh".

When your document is ready to be printed, select
Print from the File menu of the program used to create the document.

For simple documents, you can simply click Print using the default settings for the printer. For first draft print-outs, select the Speed mode rather than Quality. If you are printing a single color page of a long MS Word document, you can select the specific pages to print by clicking the Range… button. Enter the pages to be printed, or a range of pages and click OK.

Do not use the
Advanced Settings unless you are using special ink-jet paper for high resolution print jobs.

The printer Layout can be altered by clicking the Layout button.

The Fit to Page option is useful for images that you want to enlarge to fit on a single page.

A
Watermark is an image placed within your printed document as a subtle background. This is useful for adding proprietary remarks or images, perhaps for draft images being sent to a journal for review.

Print Order is useful when printing multiple copies of numerous pages. For example, if multiple pages of a thesis contain color figures, you may want to print multiple copies of just those pages (the rest would be sent to the cheaper Black & White printer). These copies can be printed sequentially, collated, or printed in reverse order.

The
Print Layout determines how many document pages will be printed to a single sheet of paper and how those pages are ordered on the sheet. This utility is useful for printing drafts for editing as printing multiple pages to a single sheet is cheaper than individual pages.

Most applications have unique printing options. These will be available in a labeled button on the
Print Window. For example, in the figure showing the Print window above, the printing options for MS Word are available in the Word Options button.
Printing PostScript (Adobe Illustrator) Documents
The Epson color ink-jet is not a PostScript printer. Although it is possible to send PostScript or Illustrator documents directly to the printer, colors and shading may be printed incorrectly. To remedy this problem, the document must be sent through a PostScript Rip program before being sent to the printer.

The PS Rip program is accessed as a print driver from the
Chooser window as described in the Help Desk File "Selecting a Printer from a Macintosh". Select PostScript3 RIP as the PostScript Printer. A new PostScritp3 RIP icon will appear on the Macintosh Desktop. The print queue for the PS Rip is paused to avoid accidental printing to the PS Rip program. To start it, contact Technical Support (ESB 1036)

Once the document is ready for the printer, select
Print from the File menu of the application used to create the document.

Click Print to send the document to the PS Rip program and then to the printer. This will send the document to the PS Rip program. The default resolution for the PS Rip program is 360 dpi. If you are using special ink-jet paper, you may set the resolution higher by selecting the first Printer Specific Options window. Then select a higher resolution setting and click Print.

Once the document is printed, be sure to drag the PostScript RIP icon on the Macintosh Desktop to the Trash. If the PS Rip printer icon is left on the desktop, other users may accidentally print to the PS Rip program.
