Using the Epson Color Stylus 850 form a PC
The Epson Stylus850 is a color ink-jet printer available to users of the GGCS Computer Lab. The cost per page is $0.75/page for students. Faculty without their own color printer can use the Epson printer, but must mark down how many pages are printed on the sheets provided on the printer table. See the Help Desk File "GGCS Printing Policies".

Printing to paper
Any file, other than PostScript (i.e. Adobe Illustrator) files can be printed directly to paper on the Epson color ink jet. Install the Epson printer in your GGCS PC User Profile by following the instructions in the Help Desk File " Installing Printers into Your PC GGCS User Profile ".

When your document is ready to be printed, select
Print from the File menu of the program used to create the document. Select the GGCS Stylus ($0.75/page) as the Printer Name in the Print Window.

Most applications have unique printing options. These will be available in a labeled button on the
Print Window. For example, in the figure showing the Print Window above, the printing options for MS Word are available in the Word Options button.

For simple documents, you can simply click OK using the default settings for the printer. For first draft print-outs, select the Speed mode rather than Quality. If you are printing a single color page of a long MS Word document, you can enter the specific pages to print in the Print Rang field. Enter the pages to be printed, or a range of pages and click OK.

The printer settings can be changed by clicking the
Properties button to bring up the Properties Window. Do not use the Advanced Settings unless you are using special ink-jet paper for high resolution print jobs.

The printer Layout can be altered by clicking the Layout tab in the Properties Window.

The
Fit to Page option is useful for images that you want to enlarge to fit on a single page.

A
Watermark is an image placed within your printed document as a subtle background. This is useful for adding proprietary remarks or images, perhaps for draft images being sent to a journal for review.

Printing PostScript (Adobe Illustrator) Documents
The Epson color ink-jet is not a PostScript printer. Although it is possible to send PostScript or Illustrator documents directly to the printer, colors and shading may be printed incorrectly. To remedy this problem, the document must be sent through a PostScript Rip program before being sent to the printer. Currently this program is not available for the Windows machines. Open your PS file in Illustrator on the Macintosh computers and follow the instructions for Printing PostScript Documents in the Help Desk File "Printing to the Epson Color Stylus 850 from a Macintosh."
