Troubleshooting
the Epson Color Stylus 850
The
Epson Stylus850 is a color ink-jet printer available to
users of the GGCS Computer Lab. The cost per page is
$0.75/page for students. Faculty without their own color
printer can use the Epson printer, but must mark down how
many pages are printed on the sheets provided on the printer
table. See the Help Desk File "GGCS Printing Policies".
Occasionally, the jets on the printer can clog or run out of
ink, causing poor printing results. Use the instructions in
this file to clean the ink jets and to check the status of
the ink cartridges. Do
not open the printer or attempt to remove ink
cartridges!
Adding
paper
Add
up to 20 sheets of paper in the upper paper tray of the
Epson Color Stylus 850. The printer can handle US Letter or
A4 sized paper. If the paper jams in the printer, contact
Technical Support (ESB 1036). Do
not open the printer or attempt to yank the paper through
the printer!
Checking
the Cartridge Ink Levels
Once
the Epson Color Stylus 850 has been chosen as the default
printer, select Print
from the File
menu of any application. Click the Utility
button on the Macintosh Print
Window.
Click the Properties
button on the Windows Print
Window
and then the Utility
tab.

Use the
Epson
StatusMonitor
to check on the level of the ink cartridges. This option is
only available on the Macintosh version. If the ink level is
low, contact Technical Support (ESB 1036).
Follow the instructions of the various tools to check on the
printer. Do
not select Head Cleaning unless the StatusMonitor or
NozzleCheck recommend it!
Cleaning the nozzles uses up ink and makes the printer more
expensive to run. Avoid an increase in page charges by not
cleaning the nozzles unless absolutely necessary.
Do
not use the Print Head Alignment
tool!
If the Epson utilities recommend realigning the heads,
contact Technical Support (ESB 1036).
