Scanning
Scanning Text Documents with Omni Page Professional
Omni Page Professional is an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) program. It converts a scanned document into editable text. This can be useful for obtaining tables of data from other researchers, or scanning old documents that do not have electronic versions. The converted document can be saved in formats compatible with MS Word, Excel, WordPerfect, and others where the information can be further edited.

Omni Page used the Apple Color OneScanner that is connected to a Macintosh computer in the GGCS Computer Lab.
Process

Place the document on the Apple Color OneScanner bed and open Omni Page Professional from the MS Office menu . Select Auto from the Process menu of Omni Page. This will scan the document and produce a window showing the raw image contents of the scanned page.

Use the Select tool (the arrow) to select the portions of the document that you want converted. Select each box and designate its Zone Contents as containing All Characters, graphics, alphnumerics, or just numerics. This is important because it will help the software to distguish between items such as "5" and "S".

Select Perform OCR from the Process menu to convert the scanned image to a text document. This will apppear in a separate window. You can edit the converted document to make sure that the conversion was correct. If there are problems, you can reset the selection boxes to better cover the raw document text.

You can now save the document by choosing Save As… from the File menu of Omni Page. You can save the document as an MS Word file, Excel file, or thers depending upon the contents of the original document.
