CD-R/RW
Basics
A
CD-R is a special recordable CD-ROM that can be read like
a regular CD-ROM in all modern CD-ROM drives. Each CD-R holds up to 650
MB of data. It can
be written once or it can be left open to add more data until it runs
out of space or it is closed. Once 650 MB of data have been written to
the CD-R nothing else can be added or removed.
If you have over 650 MB of data to write, it must be broken up into 650
MB chunks. If you have less than 650 MB of data, you must decide at the
very beginning if you want to add data later before you write the first
set of data.
A CD-RW is a special rewriteable CD-ROM that can also be read like a regular
CD-ROM. Each CD-RW holds up to 650
MB of data. It can
be written and erased many times. The burner can accept both CD-Rs and
CD-RWs. All instructions for CD-Rs apply to CD-RWs with the understanding
that data can be erased and more data can be written.
Burning
a CD-R/RW
Use
this option to create CDs that can be read by UNIX, DOS,
Windows, or Macintosh. This method creates a CD that can be read by almost
all computers. It saves data in ISO
9660 format.
Begin by organizing the data you wish to burn into a folder. The way the
data is organized in the folder will be the same way that it is organized
onto the CD-R/RW. The name of the folder will become the name of the CD-R/RW.
Copy this folder to the Temporary
Work folder in the
root of the Macintosh
HD disk. You must
write data to the CD-R/RW from the hard drive to avoid corruption of the
CD-R/RW that might occur if burning data over the network.
Select Adaptec
Toast 4.1.2 using the alias (shortcut) located in the root of the hard drive.
Then, select Files
& Folders from
the dropdown menu in the middle of the window as shown below. Now drag
the folder you wish to burn from the Temporary
Work folder and drop
it in the Data:
(Drop files and folders here)
windoid.

Click on the Data
button and then the Files
tab to verify that the data is organized the way you want on the CD-R/RW.
If you want to add additional data later
You can set a CD-R up at the beginning so that you can add data at a later
date. To do this click on Write
CD
to begin
burning the CD-R. Next, select Write
Session as shown below.

Select OK
and the CD-R will now be burned and the data will be verified.
Once the process is complete and the CD-R is ejected, please delete
the data from the Temporary
Work folder.
Important:
To add data
later, you must
save your session using the Save
command under the File
menu to the Temporary
Work
folder. Please move this file to your user space on Albany
after you are done. (You cannot
directly save this file to your user space without getting
an error.)
This saves a
copy of the directory structure of the CD-R. To add data to
the CD-R, you must first open the saved session file and
then add the new data. This allows you to place the new data
into the existing directory structure wherever you want it.
You then burn the data as described above.
If you do not follow this procedure, then only the last
burned session will be visible from a PC. The Mac will see
each session as a separate CD volume.
If you will not be adding data later
You can burn the CD-R so that no additional data can be
added later, even if there is free space available. To do
this click on Write
CD
to begin burning the CD-R. Next, select Write
Disk as
shown below.

The CD-R will now be burned and the data will be
verified.
Once the process is complete and the CD-R is ejected, please
delete
the data from the Temporary
Work
folder.
Erasing a
CD-RW
Unlike a CD-R, you can erase a CD-RW completely and add
additional data to it. To do this insert the CD-RW that you
wish to erase into the drive. Under the Recorder
menu select Disk
Info. . ..
This will bring up the dialog box shown below. Click the
Erase.
. .
button and choose Erase
or Quick
Erase to
erase the CD-RW.

For further information on burning CD-Rs consult the
documentation.pdf
in the Adaptec
Toast
subfolder of the Applications
folder on Macintosh
HD.
